What is Bio-Fouling?

Bio-fouling is the natural process wherein organic matter accumulates on materials submerged in ocean water. This process typically begins when bacterial bio-films and algae start to accumulate on the boat bottom. Barnacles are then attracted to the boat bottom, and they feed off of the built-up bio-film and algae. Algae is considered a micro-fouling agent, while barnacles are considered a macro-fouling agent. Micro-fouling precedes, and one could say even causes, macro-fouling. It has been documented that if a bio-film does not occur on the hull of your boat, then barnacle accumulation will not occur rapidly.

Current Anti-Fouling Methods

The current methods used to deter bio-fouling of structures that remain underwater for long periods of time can be harmful. Not only are they costly, but they also include many toxic chemicals that are harmful to aquatic wildlife and marine ecosystems.
