Keep the Ocean Clean with These Tips!

The ocean is a beautiful place to boat, dive, fish, and more. To help preserve the ocean's ecosystem and marine life, there are a few things we can do while enjoying its beauty. Barnacle Billy's Additive takes the environment very seriously. We are not only the best anti-fouling product on the market, but also one of the few that is 100% biodegradable and safe for marine life. Read on to learn more about how to protect our oceans!

Don't Throw It

Tossing garbage overboard is a terrible thing that quickly pollutes the ocean and can threaten the life of sea creatures. In fact, it is illegal by federal law to throw garbage of any kind overboard within 3 miles of shore. There are significant penalties associated with doing this, beyond the harmful consequences to aquatic life.

  • Civil penalties up to $25,000
  • Fine of up to $250,000 for an individual, $500,000 for an organization
  • Prison sentence of up to 6 years
  • Additional state anti-littering laws

Oil & Fuel Spills

It's important to be careful while changing the oil or refueling the gas tank on your boat. This is one of the most common and quickest ways to pollute the water. Even a small amount of spillage can cause harm and adds up over time. Before heading out on the water, check fuel lines for leaks and make sure everything is secure. As you fill up or change your oil, use something absorbent to soak up any drips or spills that may occur. It's also a good idea to only fill up your tank to about 90% of its capacity so that the fuel has room to expand in the heat without overflowing.

Invasive Species

If you aren't careful, you could be spreading invasive, or non-native, species to the bodies of water where you boat. When a species is introduced to a body of water it's not native too, there are no natural predators to help control its population size. As the species grows, it starts to compete with other wildlife for space and food. It can also introduce new diseases to the environment, killing off native species in the area.

The most common ways these species travel from one body of water to another is by hitching a ride on your boat. They can also attach to your swimsuits, clothes, water toys, and more. Make sure you aren't transporting these creatures by thoroughly cleaning your boat, including the live wells, motor, bilge, and transom. It's also a good idea to use an effective anti-fouling product on the bottom of your boat to prevent microorganisms from building up and hitching a ride on your boat.

Best Bottom Paint

Speaking of bottom paint, it is important to pick one that is safe for the environment. Common bottom paints are copper-based and contain a lot of harmful chemicals. These paints are designed to slough off into the water, exposing new bio-cide over time to keep the microorganisms from being able to grow.

Barnacle Billy's Additive is different. We have developed a safe, 100% biodegradable anti-fouling product that won't harm marine life. Use Barnacle Billy's Additive on your boat bottom as a more sustainable, eco-friendly alternative for your boat.
